Breaking the magician's code

The kids are eight and are into magic tricks at the moment.

Do you want to see a magic trick M. showed me?

Here it is:

Pick a card, any card.

I picked this one:

Then I had to put it back in the deck (without M seeing it of course), and M. mixed up the cards.

"Okay," she said dramatically.

"Is THIS your card?!"

How did she do it?

Ta-da!

  1. I've often been puzzled by card tricks, and how they work. While this one doesn't stand up to close scrutiny in advance, I've never been suspicious about the pack of cards. Did you have a slight moment of puzzlement?

  2. Love it. And would have been soooo taken in. Which probably makes me very, very naive.

    1. I'm naive too because I wondered how she achieved sleight of hand without even thinking of a fake deck of cards!

  3. Now you have to teach her not to give the trick away.

    1. Yes, though she won't learn from this because from everyone she performed the trick for, she got the best reaction from the laughter after she showed the deck!

  4. I suspected as much! Now how do they get more than one rabbit out of an empty hat?

    1. That one remains a mystery to me, alas. A couple of years ago we took the kids to a circus and the magician there made doves disappear and reappear in a box. I did notice the pigeons were a different size when they re-appeared, but still couldn't work out how he substituted them. I don't see my daughter mastering this one any time soon.

  5. Yeah, but how did she pick the same 9 of hearts that you picked?
